Christmas Past, Present and Future

I’m technically cheating as we are suppose to stick to one Christmas Memory for this but I’ve got two. One of which kind of ties into this book.  A Christmas memory that also became a Christmas tradition was being able to open a present on Christmas Eve that ended up being new Pajamas. We would then eat popcorn from the new popcorn tin mom would buy, and then my sister and I would  curl with mom on the couch to watch How The Grinch Stole Christmas followed by Mickey’s Christmas Carol with Hot Chocolate. Before bed mom would read THE CHRISTMAS STORY, and ‘Twas the night before Christmas.

Another Christmas memory was seeing how many of the guys from my dad’s unit would find themselves around our dinning room table for Christmas Eve dinner. My parents had a standing invitation for any one in my dad’s military unit who couldn’t get home for Christmas and had anytime feel that day they were welcome at our house for dinner fellowship. My mom’s favorite saying was, “No one spends Christmas alone it I can help it.”

My current Christmas plans this year as its our second Christmas without our mom and papaw, and first without grandma. And dad has to work he’s a firs responder. My sister and I have plans to go to the movies and then meet dad for Chinese food.  And leading up to Christmas we will go to this thing in our town with underground Christmas lights.

For future Christmas plans is if it does happen is to simply continue the Christmas traditions my mom started for me and my sister with my own kids and any nieces and nephews I may have.  The new pj’s on Christmas eve. Christmas movies. But more importantly my favorite one of a new ornament every year.

Blog Tour Review of Yes, Carol...It's Christmas

Title:  Yes, Carol… It’s Christmas

Author: Cindy Vincent

Chapters:  10

Pages: 103

Genre: Christmas Stories, retellings

Rating: 4 stars

My favorite Christmas story after the birth of Christ happens to be A Christmas Carol.  Even though it was 7th grade before I read the actual book and saw the stage production. The story itself was a part of my Christmas traditions from a young age as my mom loved the story, and Disney gave us a Mickey's Christmas Carol.  It's so much a Christmas tradition that I've seen even movie version of the book to date.  So when I heard about this book Yes, Carol… It's Christmas by Cindy Vincent I knew I just had to read it.
Yes, Carol... It's Christmas is a modern retelling of the classic story but with a twist.  Carol is our Scrooge, a woman who at one point loved Christmas. Decorating and hosting parties.  But when an incident happened during a Christmas party when her kids were young, Carol become pretty become a workaholic and turned her back on all things Christmas.  Until one plane flight a few days before Christmas when she is visited by the ghost of her friend, who tells her in the course of the night she will be visited by three ghosts: Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future much like the original story.    But in Yes, Carol... It's Christmas Carol makes an even bigger change than Scrooge did at least in my opinion.
I liked Yes, Carol… It's Christmas even more than A Christmas Carol if that is even possible and will now become a Christmas season re read in the years to come.   To me Carol was a character I could relate too with not wanting to celebrate Christmas, but not for the same reason as Carol. But when my mom passed away in May of 2016 that Christmas I didn't want to celebrate or decorate because my mom loved holidays and decorating especially for Christmas. It was hard to want to celebrate when she wasn't here to celebrate with.  Though I did try to keep some of the traditions alive, I failed miserably.  The only thing I remembered was the ornaments for me and my sister.  The same for 2017 as well.  It also didn't help that Christmas has always been hard to celebrate since 2003 when I lost my grandpa 13 days before Christmas. But after reading Yes, Carol... It's Christmas I am willing to try to bring back my mom's Christmas traditions to keep them alive for me and my sister and my dad. Because as this book as taught me keeping the traditions and the celebrations can also help keep the good memories alive.
There was a scene towards the end of the book when Carol was in the grocery store line in which she did something that my mom had totally done many times through the years, because in my mom words, "No one should spend Christmas alone."   I recommend this book to anyone who loves A Christmas Carol, a good retelling or Christmas in general.  This is the perfect read and rather short at 10 chapters and 103 pages.

I received a copy of this book from the author.  I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

 About the Book

As the top salesperson for Pfunn Party Supplies, Carol Frost doesn’t exactly know how to have fun herself these days. Though she wasn’t always such a humbug. Once upon a time, she was famous for hosting Christmas parties that were filled with everything from laughing guests and luscious hors d’oeuvres, to artfully iced sugar cookies and creatively decorated Christmas trees. To top it off, she even wrote a bestselling book that became the authoritative tome on Christmas party entertaining at the time—The Complete, Total, Ultimate, Everything-You-Might-Possibly-Want-to-Know Guide to Hosting the Best Christmas Parties Ever.

Yet that was long ago, before her life changed and she stashed her tinsel and twinkle lights away once and for all. And while Carol soon learned to settle for her boring but comfortable existence, an old friend knows that Carol isn’t really living up to her potential. An old friend who . . . well . . . now enjoys her eggnog in the afterlife, you might say. To goad Carol into going back to her former party-hosting ways, said friend sends three of her specter pals to pester Carol. Then, much to Carol’s annoyance, she is visited by the Ghost Hosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future on a plane filled with plenty of holiday revelers. And though Carol only wants to be left alone, the Ghost Hosts have other plans. Instead, they take her on an adventure that wasn’t exactly on her itinerary . . . or printed on her ticket stub. From that moment on, Carol’s life will never be the same. Provided, of course, she survives the jingle-bell rollercoaster of a ride and makes it home in time for Christmas . . .

Review of Where Hope Prevails

Where Hope Prevails (Return to the Canadian West #3)Title:  Where Hope Prevails

Author: Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan

Series: Return to the Canadian West Book 3

Pages: 320

Genre: Christian Historical fiction Christian Historical romance

Rating: 5 stars

Where Hope Prevails is the conclusion novel to the Return to the Canadian West. Beth Thatcher comes back to Coal Valley her decision made, she just waiting for a certain Mountie to ask a question.   What she hasn't counted on is a second teacher in Coal Valley. A teach who views teaching than Beth herself has.  Beth struggles to determine how to respond to it.  All the while a certain Mountie is questioning a career change because he thinks it’s what Beth wants, neither he nor Beth have the courage to voice their concerns.

Both Beth and her suitor have to learn to let go and trust God. Give their concerns to him, and once they do everything else falls into place.   This book wrapped up the series beautifully and cemented my love of Canadian Mounties, it’s that red serge jacket.  That was started years ago with a TV show called Due South.  This book series had me starting When Calls the Heart the Hallmark TV show, don't spoil anything for me. I just now started season 2 and Netflix only goes up to season 4. (I don't have cable.)  Though I've been cautious about Hallmarks' adaptations of Janette Oke's books after the Love comes softly movie fiasco in which after the third movie the movies were completely different. But since these books came after the movie and spin off TV show I was willing to give it a try.

Review of Where Trust Lies

Where Trust Lies (Return to the Canadian West, #2)Title:  Where Trust Lies

Author: Janette Oke Laurel Oke Logan

Series: Return to the Canadian West Book 2

Pages: 336

Genre: Christian Historical fiction

Rating: 4 stars

Where Trust Lies is the second book in the Return to the Canadian West series. For me it kind of fell into the second book slump. While it was still a good read, the fact that it focused on Beth being with her family back east.  I missed her interactions with the town and her students.  As well as the blossoming romance with her suitor back in Coal Valley.  This book has Beth questioning where she belongs.
Her mother in helps that Beth will change her mind about going back to Coal Valley arranges for a family cruise from Eastern Canada down to the United States as a way to show her what's she would be given up if she went back.  It also seemed to me that her family, her mother especially doesn't approve of Beth's suitor.  But even on the cruise she has one thing to look forward to letters and phone calls from a Mountie who has stolen her heart.
That aside Where Trust Lies did make a good bride novel in the series between the first and third book. Though it did have me reading quickly to get to the third and final book.  This is a series that you do indeed need to read in order.

Review of Loving Grace

Loving GraceTitle:  Loving Grace

Author: April Smith

Chapters: 21 plus Epilogue

Pages: 226

Genre: teen chick lit Young Adult Contemporary

Rating: 4 stars

Loving Grace by April Smith is a sweet Christian YA. Grace lives with her grandfather and works for the Baron's on their watermelon farm.  Her parents and the Barons had been friends for years before the accident. This summer Mr. and Mrs.  Baron have the idea to sponsor Grace for Watermelon queen.  But when Mr. Baron gets injured on the farm Beau and his brother end up having to travel with Grace to her queenly duties if their mother can't make it.
This book has a YA Trope that I normally don't like the girl torn between who she thinks as the boy of her dreams and the boy almost next door.    To Grace Warren Hartley is the guy of her dreams and even though Beau Barron is the boy almost next door she just sees him as her brother's best friend and the guy she's known most of her life.  Will Grace make a mistake or will she finally see what's been in front of her this whole time.
Loving Grace above everything else is a story about loving yourself first and trusting God, and trusting His timing.  This is a book that I wish had been out when I was a teenage girl.   When I was a teen Christian YA and Clean YA reads weren't really a thing. For Christian YA we had the Christy Miller series by Robin Jones Gunn.  For Clean YA we had Lurlene McDaniel but the majority of her books where dealing with teens dealing with terminal illness not light happy reading.
Had I read this book as a teen it would have been 5 stars for sure. It ended up being 4 stars mainly because I figured out how it was going to end and who she picked before it ended.  I knew who I was rooting for pretty much as soon as I met him.
Even though this was a YA novel and I'm technically passed that age bracket I am looking forward to the next book from April Smith.

Review of Surviving Adam Meade

Surviving Adam MeadeTitle:  Surviving Adam Meade

Author: Shannon Klare

Pages: 244

Genre: Teen Contemporary

Rating: 4 stars
Claire Collins has one goal get into her first choice really her only choice college and get out of North Carolina. But she doesn't know how to get rid of local high school football star Adam Meade and not just any football player the star quarterback. They got off on the wrong foot when Adam mistakes Claire for the watergirl when instead she's the coaches daughter.  Adam has never failed at anything in life but for the life of him he can't seem to get Claire. Claire who after dating one quarterback and ended up with her broke she has sworn off dating anymore football players.  Adam's goal is to get a football scholarship and do his grandma proud.
Claire dad as Adam's coach is helping him with college applications, college trips and being the male role model in his life. Every time Claire turns around Adams there. Her dad invites him to dinner and he's friends sort of with her brother. Claire is also the stats keeper for the team.
What I loved about Surviving Adam Meade which is true for a lot of teen football books and football movies, is that, that is more to them that football.   Adam might be a hotshot high school football star but he does love his grandma and he wants to do her proud. Both Claire and Adam have to learn about themselves and each other in order to determine what they each want in life. And rather or not their relationship and possibly love is worth fighting for.

Review of Read and Gone

Read and Gone (The Haunted Library Mysteries, #2)Title:  Read and Gone

Author: Allison Brook

Series: The Haunted Library Mystery book 2

Chapters: 38

Pages: 320

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Rating: 3.5 stars

Read and Gone is the second book in The Haunted Library mysteries by Allison Brook. Carrie Singleton has settled into her job as the program librarian at her library; is dating a great guy. When her father whom she hasn't seen in years shows up needing her help to basically break the law.
I enjoyed this one more that the first book in the series. I think it would have been a better fit if I had read it in either November or December as it’s a Christmas cozy mysteries. But it's a great book to curl up with a cup of cocoa a blanket and a cat if you have one as the cat in this series plays a big roll or a dog and spend a cold winter's day reading.   I loved that even though Carrie's toned down her look she's still not your typical librarian. As a library Assistant it’s nice to read books about libraries that don't show librarians in the typical skirt suit and tight bun.   We dress in a variety of styles and we are different ages.

Review of Died in the Wool

Died in the WoolTitle:  Died in the wool

Author: Peggy Ehrhart

Series: Knit and Nibble Mystery

Chapters: 24

Pages: 320

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Rating: 3.5

Died in the Wool by Peggy Ehrhart is the second book in the A Knit & Nibble Mystery series Pamela is trying to enjoy her summer in Arborvillle her daughter is home from college for the summer and Catriona the cat that she took in has made herself at home in the household. But then there's another murder and the victim is found with an aardvark that the group knitted to help raise money for the school's football team. The victim happens to be the hated history teacher who is against the football team.  In the eyes of the town the knitting club is the prime suspect just because the knitted aardvark was found.  It's up to Pamela to find the real killer before there's another victim.  And clear her knitting group's name.
I enjoyed this one a little bit more than the first one in the series. I will admit that my favorite character is Catriona I loved reading about all of the trouble that little cat manged to get into in this book.  Though most of it was through the  fault of her owner.   It was a quick read and typical of most cozy mysteries, if your looking for something quick and easy to read in one or two sitting this book fits that bill.
