Deadly Revenge by Patricia Bradley

While this was a great end of the series, I did enjoy being back in Pearl River and seeing familiar faces. As well as the suspense and mystery that this book had. It was the mystery and suspense that kept me turning the page. I loved getting to know Jenna Hart better now that she’s a small town deputy.  As well as seeing small town Tennessee police work with the TBI working together in the form of Agent Maxwell Anderson. However my only complaint was that the relationship between the hero and heroine felt somewhat rushed.

Just Dont' fall by Emma St. Clair review

Title: Just Don’t fall

Author: Emma St. Clair

Ch: 25 plus epilogue

Pg: 330

Series: Sweater Weather

Genre: Rom Com

Rating: 3.5

Publisher: Create if writing LLC

I’m not normally a fan of the fake dating trope and brothers best friend trope. But I’m a huge sucker for a good hockey rom com. Logan Barnes is a hockey player kicked back to the minor leagues of hockey for his behavior and fighting. Parker Douglas is the social media manager for the team and the little sister of Logan’s high school best friend.

This one took me a bit to get into. But once I did, I did enjoy it. It was hockey that hooked me. While it wasn’t a favorite, I do look forward to the rest of the Sweater Weather series and more books by Emma St Clair.

A Royal Christmas by Melody Carlson Review

Title: A Royal Christmas

Author: Melody Carlson

Ch: 17

Pg: 167

Genre: Contemporary romance

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher: Revell

I’m generally not a fan of princess stories, the one where the commoner falls for the prince. But if it’s a girl who finds out she’s a long lost princess think The Princess Diaries then I want to read. Throw in Christmas and I’m hooked. And that’s A Royal Christmas by Melody Carlson gives the reader.

I have to say I was rooting for Adelaide from page one. I wanted her to get a happy ending. And the Magic of Christmas in Europe even if it’s only in the pages of a book added to the story. It’s a quick read. This is the perfect novella to read this Christmas and add to your Christmas stack in returning years.

Summer Reading by Jenn McKinlay Review

Title: Summer Reading

Author: Jenn McKinlay

Ch: 29

Pg: 435

Genre: Rom Com

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher: Berkeley

I’ve found Jenn McKinlays rom coms to be hit or Miss for me. This one was a hit. I was thrilled that for once the book worm in the story was the hero. Hey if a guy wants to read me a book I’d be all for it. And I enjoyed that the heroine was dyslexic. And this dyslexic reading was fond of the dyslexic friendly font that the physical book was printed in. This is also a rom com with few steamy scenes on the page.

A Time to Swill by Sherry Harris review

 Title:  A Time to Swill

Author:  Sherry Harris

Ch: 40

Pg: 204

Series: Chloe Jackson, Sea Glass Saloon mystery book 2

Genre:  Cozy Mystery

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher: Kensington

A Time to Swill is the second book in the Chloe Jackson, Sea Glass Saloon Mystery series by Sherry Harris about the librarian turned half bar owner Chloe. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first book in the series.  And I think that is due in part to the fact that the mystery was a a cold case one so to speak.  It was also a little slower paced than the first book in the series, but I did enjoy getting to know the characters better.   I am looking forward to the next book in the  series to see what other mystery Chole finds herself involved in.

Hooked on You by Kathleen Fuller review

Title:  Hooked on You

Author: Kathleen Fuller

Chapters: 17 plus epilogue

Pages: 320

Series:  Maple Falls Romance

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

Hooked on You is my first book by Kathleen Fuller I haven’t read previous books of hers because I’m not a fan of Amish fiction and I’m also not a fan of small town romances. But something told me to pick this one up and I’m glad I did. I was hooked from the first page pun intended.

But it wasn’t the romantic relationship that kept me turning pages. It was the relationship between Riley and her grandma I’m a sucker for books with close grandma granddaughter relationship. And the friendship in the book also make for a good read. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. Though I probably won’t pick up her Amish fiction because I’m not a fan of that genre.

City of Villians by Estelle Laure Review

Title:  City of Villains

Author:  Estelle Laure

Ch: 28

Pg:  240

Series: City of Villains

Genre:  retelling

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

I enjoyed this one more than I thought I would as fairy tale and Disney retellings have been hit or miss for me lately. But City of Villains by Estelle Laure was a hit. I enjoyed the noir crime novel aspect of the book. Mary Elizabeth and Bella have this weird detective duo going on and I love it. I want more of those two in the next book in the series.

As the first book in the series it is a little slow, but that’s to be expected of a first book in a series as it sets up the world and develops the characters. And of course like most first books in a series there’s a cliff hanger, but with this being a bit of retelling and backstories as well as a slight crime novel you won’t a bit of a cliff hanger to get to come back for more.

This is indeed a YA novel so there is more than its fair share of teenage drama. That I didn’t care for and not just because I’m older than your typical YA reader, because I didn’t even care for teenage drama in my YA novels when I was a teen. But to me that’s the only con of the book. But I loved Mary Elizabeth and Bella enough to overlook it. Because City of Villains gave me a different take on Captain Hook’s back story. And I’m always a sucker for a new twist on Hook’s story. Since I’m still convinced that Hook was never the villain of the Peter Pan story.

The Lady in Residence by Allison Pittman review

Title:  The Lady in Residence

Author:  Allison Pittman

Ch: 22 plus epilogue

Pg:  253

Series: Doors to the Past

Genre:  Dual time

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher: Barbour

I’m not going to lie even after finishing Lady In Residence by Allison Pittman I don’t know how I feel about it.  It’s one of those that I am on the fence about, and that doesn’t happen often. I didn’t love it nor did I hate it. I did enjoy the dual time aspect of the novel. I am finding that I do indeed enjoy dual time I’ve always been a historical fiction reader and I’m now slowly getting into reading contemporary though it’s not my go to genre. Dual time gives me my favorite genre while edging me into contemporary.

Dini Blackstone was my favorite character in the book. I loved her quirkiness as well as her love of true crime. And her determination to solve a century year old crime. I saw some of myself in her, I’m a true crime nut especially historical crime. Quin the modern hero was alright he just wasn’t a favorite.

I didn’t care for the historical heroine Hedda but that’s due in part to the fact that don’t care for unreliable narrators. I’ve never liked reading from their points of view. Nor was I fond of the ghost story aspect.  But that doesn’t mean someone else won’t love it.

However, I did enjoy how the author wove both stories and time periods together to get one interesting story.

Fishing for Trouble by Elizabeth Logan review

 Title:  Fishing For Trouble

Author:  Elizabeth Logan

Ch: 36

Pg:  304

Series: Alaskan Diner Mystery book 2

Genre:  Cozy Mystery

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher: Berkley Books

Fishing for Trouble by Elizabeth Logan is the second book in the Alaskan Diner Mystery series. I enjoyed this arm chair visit to Alaska that included a mystery. The second book in the series was faster paced than the first in the series. Because setting and characters have already been developed. And like all good cozies this one includes a sweet cat. And unlike most cozies this series has a law enforcement officer who doesn’t mind outside help, which makes me think the case is because it’s set in small town Alaska. And from reading this series I’ve learned small town Alaska is more like a village in lower 48 terms.

Dorothy and Jack: The Transforming Friendship of Dorothy L. Sayers and C.S. Lewis review

Title: Dorothy and Jack: The Transforming Friendship of Dorothy L. Sayers and C.S. Lewis

Author: Gina Dalfonzo

Ch: 7

Pg: 208

Genre:  Nonfiction, Biography

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Publisher: Baker books

I knew that Dorothy L. Sayers was a mystery author who rivaled Christie mostly because her mysteries novel graced my mom's bookshelves. And I knew that C.S. Lewis was an author however I was not introduced to Lewis's writing as a kid with the Narnia books (a book series I still haven't read). I was included to his writing with A Grief Observed which I read as adult after losing my mom.  As well as an introduced in the historical fiction novel Becoming Mrs. Lewis: The Improbable Love Story of Joy Davidman and C. S. Lewis by

Patti Callahan

So I knew nothing of the friendship between Dorothy L. Sayers and C.S. Lewis so I was willing to pick this one up and learn more. I have to say I was not disappointed.  Reading this and learning more about both C.S. Lewis and Dorothy L. Sayers I know want to read her mysteries books and pick up some more Lewis's nonfiction and possibly finally read The Chronicles of Narnia.

Cause I mean Lewis was the one who said "Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” and “A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest.” I take that to mean a well written children's book can be read and enjoyed by anyone.

Nacho Average Murder review

Title:  Nacho Average Murder

 Author:  Maddie Day

 Ch: 56

 Pg: 324

Series: Country Store Mystery book 7

 Genre: Cozy Mystery

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher:  Kensington

Robbie's not in Indiana anymore, in book 7 of the Country Store mystery series. In which Robbie is back in California for  her high school reunion where she is hit with questions about her mother's death.  Determined to get answers she starts investigating  only to get sucked into another mystery.

The California setting was a nice change, but I will admit I miss the small Indiana town in which the rest of  the books in this series is set. This wasn't  my favorite of the series but I still enjoyed it. It was a little slower paced that other books in the series. I do look forward for the next book in the series and hopefully back in Indiana.

For Whom the Book Tolls review

Title:  For Whom the Book Tolls

Author:  Laura Gail Black

 Ch: 36

 Pg:  364

Series: An Antique Bookshop Mystery book 1

 Genre:  Cozy Mystery

 Rating: 3.5 Stars

Publisher:  Crooked Lane Books

For Whom the Book Tolls is the first book in the An Antique Bookshop Mystery series by Laura Gail Black. This cozy mystery is set in small town Hokes Folly North Carolina.  I have to say that this one was a fairly quick read.  I finished  this one in a day.  That while this one wasn't my favorite, I'm starting to thank that I'm getting burnt out on cozy mysteries set in small town and bookshops I did enjoy it.  Plus I guess the suspect before the book was even finished.   But I guess that's to be expected when you read a lot of cozy mysteries.   I do however love the puny titles cozy mysteries have.

For a first book in the series the plot didn't drag and the character development was pretty fast.  And I like most of the characters. Expect for the one who turned out to be the villain.  I guess that played a part in me figuring out who done it before the amateur sleuth  in the book did.  I do look forward to the next book in the series to see what else Jenna Quinn and the gang get up to.

Don't Keep Silent

Title:  Don’t Keep Silent

Author:  Elizabeth Goddard

Ch: 64

Pg:  358

Series: Uncommon Justice

Genre:  Christian Romantic Suspense

Rating: 3.5

Publisher:  Revell

Don’t Keep Silent by Elizabeth Goddard is the third and final book in the Uncommon Justice series. It focuses on the third McKade brother Liam and Rae Burke. And I have to say that even though it was still a good read it was my least favorite of the series.

It took me a while to read because even though I was enjoying it while I was reading it. I didn’t enjoy enough to want to pick it up as my first choice to read. I ended up finally finishing it in a day because I had finished everything else I had read.

The suspense and setting were awesome as were the secondary characters were awesome as was Liam the hero. But the heroine Rae drove me nuts m. But another than that it was still a nice wrap up to the series. I think other fans of the series will enjoy this one I just think I read it at the wrong time.

The Christmas Swap

 Author:  Melody Carlson

Ch: 17

Pg:  163

Genre:  Christmas Romance, Rom Com

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher:  Revell

I’m a sucker for Christmas movies and books. From the beginning of November till the end of December I’m curled up with a blanket reading Christmas books. So when i read the burb about a house switch during Christmas I knew I had to read this one.

I know the house switch trope has been done before, but Melody Carlson brought her own unique twist to it. In which the house switch becomes one sided but only one party knows that.

I enjoyed this sweet Christmas Rom Com in book form. It was a quick read that I finished it in a day. This book is great for those who love hallmark movies and rom coms and Christmas.

A Spell for Trouble review

A Spell for Trouble by Esme Addison | GoodreadsTitle:   A Spell for Trouble

Author:   Esme Addison

Chapters: 25

Pages: 336

Series: An Enchanted Bay Mystery book 1

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher: Crooked Lane Books

A spell for trouble is the first book in the An enchanted bay mystery series by Esme Addison. And while it wasn’t my favorite cozy it was still an enjoyable read. I loved the small fictional North Carolina beach town. The coast of the North Carolina is one of my favorite setting for books.

Alexandra Daniels finds herself back in Bellamy Bay her mom’s hometown and not only discovers she’s descendent from mermaids and is a witch but finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery. In which her aunt is a prime suspect she’s determined to clear her aunts name. But does that mean she’ll become the killers next victim?

This book was a quick read for charm and I’m not going to lie gave me Practical Magic vibes. I am looking forward to the next book in the series as well as other books by this author.

This book is a good book for readers who like a little magic with their cozies.

Review of Bound for Murder

Bound for Murder (Blue Ridge Library Mysteries #4)Title:  Bound For Murder

Author: Victoria Gilbert

Series: Blue Ridge Library Mystery book4

Chapters: 29

Pages: 304

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Bound for Murder by Victoria Gilbert is the fourth book in the Blue Ridge Library Mysteries series. Amy's determined to find out the truth and clear the grands name and keep Sunny's run for mayor from being finished.

Like the first three books in the series, I enjoyed this one.  I love that Amy's day job is that of a library director. As a library assistant in my day job, I enjoy books set around libraries or with a library employee as the main character and I enjoy cozies so I knew I would enjoy this one. And like previous ones in the series. Bound for Murder is a quick read.  I look forward to the next one in the series.

Review of The Gray Chamber

The Gray ChamberTitle:  The Gray Chamber

Author: Grace Hitchcock

Series: True Colors

Chapters: 25

Pages:256

Genre: Christian Historical fiction

Rating: 3.5 Stars

Publisher:  Barbour Books

The Gray Chamber by Grace Hitchcock is the newest Installment in the True Colors.  I’ve been finding this series hit or miss for me. I either love the book or I don’t. This one was a mix for me. I enjoyed the story and learning about this point in history.  And what would get a woman sent to an asylum and in researching my own family genealogy I’ve actually discovered how easy it was for a husband to get rid of a wife or any other “problem female” in the family.

However, even though I loved the story and secondary characters I didn’t really care for either of the main characters, but to me that didn’t take away from the story and think most readers will be fine with it.
