Summer in the Spotlight by Liz Johnson review

 Title: Summer in the Spotlight

Author: Liz Johnson

Ch: 25 plus epilogue

Pg: 345

Series: Prince Edward Island shores 3

Genre: Contemporary Christian fiction

Rating: 5 stars

Publisher: Revell

Summer in the Spotlight by Liz Johnson is the third and final book in the Prince Edward Island shores series. And it’s my favorite book of the series. But then I’ve been wanting Levi’s story since book one. What’s not to love about a quiet bookish hero. Kelsey Ahern is determined to save the local theater after a hurricane and the least likely person to help Levi Ross.

Levi comes into his own is this book. But the seeds of the growth and change started in book one so it’s best to read the series in order.

But out of all the Ross brothers Levi is my favorite. He’s not a fisherman like Oliver or a hockey player like Eli. He’s not even a typical romance hero but he’s a quiet bookworm who loves his family. Quite frankly we need more heroes like him in fiction.

I loved Levi and Kelsey’s story and Summer in the Spotlight wrapped up the series beautifully.

Harley Quinn Ravenous by Rachael Allen review

 Title: Harley Quinn Ravenous

Author: Rachael Allen

Ch: 50

Pg: 368

Series: DC Icons:Harley Quinn 2

Genre: retelling comic

Rating: 4 stars

Publisher: Random house

Harley Quinn Ravenous picks up where Harley Quinn Reckoning left off and Harley is now a college freshman. I loved reading about her adventures in college. And I’m even happier that the joker only makes an appearance as a side character. So no no Harley Quinn abuse by joker in sight. I refuse to call it a relationship.

Harley Quinn: Reckoning by Rachel Allen Review

Title: Harley Quinn: Reckoning

Author: Rachel Allen

Ch: 49 plus epilogue

Pg: 391

Series: DC Icons: Harley Quinn

Genre: retelling comic

Rating: 4 stars

Publisher: Random House

I have to say Harley Quinn is one of my favorite DC anti-heroes. I don’t consider her a villain though others might. But I enjoyed this one because it gives her a back story as a teenager in Gotham with ADHD which actually makes sense considering comic Harley. It was a quick read.

Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams review

Title: Practice Makes Perfect

Author: Sarah Adams

Ch: 40 plus epilogue

Pg: 352

Series: When in Rome Book 2

Genre: Rom Com

Rating: 4 stars

Publisher: Dell

I liked this on more than I did When in Rome. Annie is indeed a very likeable character. Though I hated the way the town and even her family treated her sometimes. And Will is one of my favorite types of heroes, a bad boy (but not really) with a heart of gold. There is a steamy scene of two in this one, but they fade to black.

To Free the Stars by J'nell Ciesielski review

Title: To Free the Stars

Author: J’nell Ciesielski

Ch: 33 plus epilogue

Pg: 400

Series: Jack and Ivy book 2

Genre: Historical Fiction

Rating: 5 stars

Publisher: Thomas Nelson

I loved To Free The Stars as much as I did The Brilliance of Stars. I do have to say though J’nell did not make Jack and Ivy’s journey easy. But they do say the course of true love never was smooth. This one picks up ten years after the first book. And let’s say Ivy’s had a hard ten years. But despite what others have told her she’s held on to hope. Jack on the other hand has given up.

To Free The Stars is indeed more suspenseful and stressful than the first one. And you feel the emotions that both Ivy and Jack feel. Despite being a spy Ivy does wear her heart on her sleeve. I finished this one in two days. One of which had me saying up late to finish because I had to know what happened.

And there ended up being a character that I should have hated. But despite what they did I couldn’t hate them. Because of what they went through.

This is a two book series that you really need to read in order. I do suggest caution to readers because there is mentions of trauma and mind control. As well PTSD on the page even though for the time period that wasn’t the term at the time.

Though it all J’nell Ciesielski still manages to give us a romance that won’t die. And I still got to say she gave me what the MCU wouldn’t do she gave me a Winter Soldier Black Widow love story.

Summer Reading by Jenn McKinlay Review

Title: Summer Reading

Author: Jenn McKinlay

Ch: 29

Pg: 435

Genre: Rom Com

Rating: 3.5 stars

Publisher: Berkeley

I’ve found Jenn McKinlays rom coms to be hit or Miss for me. This one was a hit. I was thrilled that for once the book worm in the story was the hero. Hey if a guy wants to read me a book I’d be all for it. And I enjoyed that the heroine was dyslexic. And this dyslexic reading was fond of the dyslexic friendly font that the physical book was printed in. This is also a rom com with few steamy scenes on the page.

Emma of 83rd Street review

Title: Emma of 83rd Street

Author: Audrey Bellezza Emily Harding

Ch: 35 plus prologue and epilogue

Pg: 375

Genre: Rom Com retelling

Rating: 4 stars

Publisher: Gallery books

I loved Emma of 83rd Street by Audrey Bellezza and Emily Harding even with the page steamy scenes. Because Emma has always been my favorite Jane Austen because Jane gave us a regency rom com. That Emma is the one most easy to adapt as a modern retelling in this reader’s opinion. Which explains why Clueless still remains one of my favorite movie rom coms. And that’s what Emma of 83rd Street gave me, it gave me clueless vibes.

Forged in Love by Mary Connealy review

Title: Forged in Love

Author: Mary Connealy

Ch: 31

Series: Wyoming Sunrise

Genre: Christian historical fiction western Christian historical romance

Rating: 4.5 stars

Publisher: Bethany House

Reading Forged in Love reminded me why I love Mary Connealy’s western romances. Because she writes feminine heroines who are also tough as nails. Because let’s face it women who went west couldn’t be damsels in distress because they wouldn’t last. Mariah Stover learned blacksmithing at her father’s knee along with her brother. When tragedy strikes, she steps up to be the town blacksmith.
Clint Roberts owns the only diner in town he loves to cook. But he’s also loved Mariah from a distance for years.

I love how both heroine and hero have roles that aren’t the norm but still work for the time period but work for both together. And I especially loved that Clint loves Mariah for herself. As well as the strong faith thread throughout the story.

The Starlet Spy by Rachel Scott McDaniel review

 Title: The Starlet Spy

Author: Rachel Scott McDaniel

Ch: 33

Pg: 259

Series: Heroines of WWII 11

Genre: Christian historical fiction Christian Historical Romance

Rating: 5 stars

Publisher: Barbour

It was the whole female spy heroine that got me to pick up The Starlet Spy. I’m a sucker for WWII books and books with spies. Not to mention that I’ve loved all of Rachel’s previous books. And though this one is a departure from her usual 1920s dual time novels. I enjoyed this one from start to finish. And the fact that this was the first WWII novel that I read set in Sweden kept me turning pages.

I enjoyed meeting all the characters, especially Amelie and Finn. Throughout The Starlet Spy it felt like I was traveling through Sweden with Amelie and loved what she got from seeing the Northern lights which happens to be on my travel bucket list. To some readers the faith content might seem subtle, but I saw it all through the story it wove through every aspect of Amelie’s life.

And of course, I’ve not got to try Salmiak as a fan of black licorice yes I know I’m weird. Amelie Blake has become my second favorite Rachel heroine Devyn Asbury from Undercurrent of Secrets will always be my favorite as a fellow Louisville girl.
