Review of The Refuge

The RefugeTitle:  The Refuge

Author: Ann H Gabhart

Chapters: 35 plus epilogue

Pages: 400

Genre: Christian Historical fiction

Rating: 4 stars

The Refuge by Ann H. Gabhart is not my first by her, but it is my first Shaker book that I’ve read.  Darcie and her husband end up at Harmony Hill the fictional Shaker village in Kentucky to ride out a Cholera epidemic when he’s killed in an accident. Leaving Darcie widowed and pregnant something that the Shaker’s don’t really know how to deal with. When she meets widower Flynn Keller and his daughter.

I’m not going to lie I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. I don’t read Amish fiction and for some reason that’s how I was viewing fiction books about the Shakers the same way. I was surprised but in a good way.  Ann gave her characters in this book the same depth that she gives all her characters.

Even though Harmony Hill is a fictional Shaker village it was easy to picture how it was set up because I’ve been to both Shaker villages in Kentucky. And I have a feeling that Ann based Harmony Hill on the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill in central Kentucky.   Ann brings life to her historical novels as well as the Kentucky setting, all of her books I’ve read have been set in Kentucky and I love that.

My favorite character in the book wasn’t Darcie or Flynn instead it was Flynn’s young daughter whose headstrong nature reminded me a bit of myself at that age. To me she makes the whole book.

The Refuge is a book about leaving to trust God and his timing not our timing.  I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian historical fiction. As well as readers who like to read fictional stories based on real historic places.

Review of Catwoman: SoulStealer

Catwoman: Soulstealer (DC Icons, #3)
Title: Catwoman: Soulstealer
Author:   Sarah J Maas
Pg:384
Series: DC Icons book 3
Genre: teen comic book heroes, retellings
Rating:  3.5 Stars
Catwoman: Soulstealer the third book in the DC Icons series by Sarah J Maas was the one I was most concerned about. Mainly because I have yet to meet a Sarah J Maas book that I’ve actually liked. To me the majority of her books either have love triangles or abusive relationship in them.  Though I find myself in the minority feeling that way.
However, with this book she surprised me. It was the first book of hers that I actually enjoyed. Even though it was my least favorite of this series so far. Selina Kyle has come back to Gotham for revenge, and why the Batman’s way it’s up Luke Fox aka Batwing to protect the city. Though I am total Batcat, and ship Bruce and Selina. The relationship between Selina and Former Marine turned superhero Luke Fox though he was already a superhero in my book when he joined the Marines is believable and actually had me rooting for them to make it.
I loved seeing Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn join Catwoman’s gang has me wanting the DC Sirens movie. The one time Sarah having a character purl her dialogue and it fit, the old school catwoman purred a lot she doesn’t do it.
All in all a pretty good read.

Joyful Surrender

Joyful Surrender: 7 Disciplines for the Believer's LifeTitle:  Joyful Surrender: 7 Disciplines for the Believers Life

Author: Elisabeth Elliot

Pages: 176

Genre: non fiction

Rating: 4 Stars

The Only book I have read of Elisabeth Elliot prior to this on is her biography of Amy Carmichael. Which I enjoyed. I also know that she lost her missionary husband Jim when he was killed by the same tribe he was trying to reach.  So I wanted to give another book of hers a try as I have heard multiple people that her books were worth reading.

Joyful Surrender: 7 Disciplines for the Believer’s Life focuses on seven disciplines that can be found in scripture to help a believer in life.  As with Bible studies and devotions as long as they are backed up with scripture and God’s word can give each reader something different gleamed from the book. No two people will read this book the same way.

The part of the book that helped me the most, on overcoming anxiety and trusting God in times of trials and hardship my not be what sticks out to another reader. They may find something else in the book that helps them.

I do know that I want to pick up more of Elisabeth Elliot’s books to read in the future. If you haven’t read this book or other works by Elisabeth Elliot I highly suggest that you do.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Review of Batman: Nigthwalker

Batman: Nightwalker (DC Icons, #2)Title: Batman: Nightwalker
Author:   Marie Lu
Pg:272
Series: DC Icons book 2
Genre: teen comic book heroes, retellings
Rating:  4 stars
Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu is the second book in the DC Icons Series Wonder Woman was the first one. This book was better than I thought it would be as my first Marie Lu book I didn’t know what to think. But she did an awesome job of writing angry teenage Bruce Wayne. A teenage with a chip on his shoulder who just can’t wait to get his trust fund.
However, I still don’t understand who thought it was smart for a teenage boy to do his community service hours in an insane asylum. What the heck was the judge and cop thinking. An insane asylum is no place for a teenage. But other than that it was still a pretty good read but I still think Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo is my favorite of the series so far.

Review of Falling for You

Falling for You (A Bradford Sisters Romance, #2)
Title: Falling for You
Author:   Becky Wade
Pg:370
Series: Bradford Sisters Romance book 2
Genre: Christian Contemporary
Rating:  3.5 stars
Falling for You is the second book in the Bradford Sister’s series by Becky Wade. This book while technically a standalone book in a series it still best to read them in order. This book focues on oldest sister Willow who’s a model taking a break from modeling to run her family’s bed and breakfast. When finds herself face to face with former NFL Quarterback Corbin Stewart who just happens to be her ex-boyfriend.
Corbin wants a second chance and Willow wants nothing to do with him, she’s put that part of her life behind her. But then the two end up working on a project to help a teenage girl solve a missing person’s case. They both realize that they both played a part in their relationship falling apart.
Even though I enjoyed this one I didn’t love it as much as the first book in the series. Two me this book kind of had a bit of second book syndrome. It was still good I just didn’t love it. But I all still looking forward to the final book in the series as well as anything else Becky writes.
