Review of Hook

Hook by Terry Brooks.Title: Hook

Author: Terry Brooks

Pages: 275

Genre: fantasy

Rating: 4 stars

Hook is the novelization of the movie of the same name. This is the story of Peter Pan as an adult.  When Hook kidnaps his kids in order to force Peter to return to Neverland. This novelization was just what I expected it to be. But I did enjoy it because it was a work down memory lane, Hook was one of my favorite movies as a child.  In fact the Hook in Hook was my favorite Hook from a Peter Pan adaption under Once Upon a time

Review of The Restitution

When Isabel Ashton’s son is kidnapped, she has no one else to turn to but Captain Kent Carlton, the pirate who sired the child in a violent act. Still holding onto her dreams marrying a nobleman and returning to her privileged social class, she spurns the repentant pirate who will do anything to win her forgiveness as they both risk everything to rescue their child.Title: The Restitution

Author: MaryLu Tyndall

Series: Legacy of the Kings Pirates Book 3

Chapters: 32

Genre: Christian Historical fiction

Rating: 5 stars

The Restitution is the third book in the Legacy of the Kings Pirates.  This book has mention of the hero and Heroine from the first two books, but they aren’t actually in this book.   Lady  Isabel Ashton the secondary heroine from book two is the main character in this book.  Isabel’s young son is kidnapped by pirates and she is forced to turn to the one person she never wanted to see again. Her son’s father Captain Kent Carlton.  He’s a pirate and she doesn’t think that she can trust him, but he might just be her last hope.  Kent has always been seen as the villain by most people including Isabel and he can’t blame her she has every reason to see him as such.
So far this is my favorite in the series, but that might change when I read the fourth one. With this book you don’t know who’s the hero or the villain.  The Restitution gives new meaning to the phase you can’t judge a book by its cover, because you cannot judge the characters by their looks or what they say.

All I can say is that The Restitution keeps you guessing on what was going to happen next.  Which was a good thing. It  keep me reading.  The Restitution also raises the question can a pirate be a hero? I leave you to find the answer yourself.

Review of Tears of the Sea

Seasons of HumilityTitle: Tears of The Sea

Author: Marylu Tyndall

Chapters: 30 Plus Epilogue

Pages: 260

Genre: Christian, fairy tale, parable.

Rating: 5 stars

Tears of the Sea is not your Little Mermaid story. It is so much better.  This book is more than just a fairy tale retelling.   It is an allegory to show the love that Christ has for us. That true love is indeed real, and that Christ showed the greatest act of true love when He died on the cross for us. I loved that while Tears of the Sea was a fictional story it pointed to greatest true story ever told.
Perdita was cursed to eternality as a mermaid by an evil wizard because she failed to prove that true love was true, and she also refused to marry him.  Only given one month every ten years to find a man to fall in love with her and die for her.  She recues Savion from a drowning and starts to have feelings for him.  Savion is on a mission from his father to save someone, he just doesn’t know who.  Savion being a prince and an honorable man he tries to avoid Perdita when she throws herself at him.
I love fairy tale retellings but Tears of the Sea was so much better, because it was so much more. The only parallel to The Little Mermaid was saving the prince from drowning, Marylu’s novel was so much better.

With each book of Marylu’s that I read they just keep getting better and better.  I can’t wait for Marylu’s next book. My goal for this year is to finish reading all of the Marylu Tyndall books that I haven’t read.   Which just leaves finishing three series, Surrender to Destiny, and the Escape to Paradise series,   The Falcon and the Sparrow, and the last two books in the Legacy of the Kings, the last one isn’t out yet.

2015 Reading challenges and Book buying ban

2015 Reading challenges
The only reading challenges I plan on doing this year are the goodreads challenges, because multiple reading challenges on different blogs are hard to keep up with. So for my sanity and to keep reading fun I am only going to being doing the main good reads challenge and then some of the challenges that one of my good reads groups do.

The goodreads challenges I am going to be doing are
Janurary’s reading challenege only your bookshelf

Another personal reading challenge is to read at least six “classics” this year.
Peter Pan in Kenisgton Gardens
The Old Man and the sea
Dubliners
Treasure Island
Oliver Twist
Kidnapped

I also want to read at least 12 nonfiction books this year as well, one a month.

For 2015 I am putting myself on a book buying ban. I also putting myself on a sort of library ban as well.  With the book buying ban before I can buy a new book I have to read at least ten books that I own before I can buy a book. This is in order to get my TBR pile down.  When it comes to e books I have to read at least five e books before I can buy a new e book.

However the book ban doesn't apply to anything I buy in late May or early June because if I buy anything then it will be with my birthday money and not my money.

With the library book ban, it’s not so much a ban as it is me having to read at least two of my own books before I can check a book out from the library. I need to get my TBR pile down. It’s safe to say that I have a slight problem of buying more books than I read. I need to something about it.

I am also hoping that the book buying ban will also help me save money.
