Christy Chapters 5-11

"that if we will let God, He can use even our disappointments, even our annoyances to bring us a blessings. There's a practical way to start the process too: by thanking him for whatever happens, no matter how disagreeable it seems."

General Impressions
The story's starting to pick up for me. And it seems that Christy's  slowly starting to settle in to Cutter Gap.  But the one thing I've noticed even though I've never read the book before some scenes seem familiar, and I think that's because I used to watch the TV show as a kid.

Discussion Questions

1.       Despite all the Sad revelations in this section, what moment or scene stood out to you as  either really funny or really uplifting?
There were two scenes that I found uplifting one being the scene in which Christy takes the time to help brush out Ruby Mae's hair.  As well as when she helps prepare the baby for burial and gives up some of her own ribbons to make the little girl look pretty.

2.       Now That We’ve gotten to know David and Dr. MacNeill a bit better, what are your impressions of them? How do you feel about their characters, their attitudes, and their interactions with others?
That David is still pretty much an outsider to the people of Cutter Gap.  But he has a strong faith.  With Dr. MacNeill even though he's an educated doctor, he's still one of the highlanders. He's a local whom everyone trusts.  Who has lost faith and his way.

3.       What are your thoughts about Christy’s requests for donations from friends and various companies? DO you  think was foisting  a cause upon others inappropriately? (To reference a convestaion in chapter 11.) Or do you think such letters could be a blessing to both giver and receiver? Would you have approached things differently?

With asking companies it feels like she kind of crossed the line. Even with her friends it felt like she was kind of pushing the limits.  I think that writing letters just telling friends and family what’s going in Cutter Gap and about her students would have been the better route and let them decide if they wanted to donate anything. At least that would have been the route I would have taken.

  1. I love how Christy takes her burden of Ruby Mae and turns it into a blessing. Also it was so sad about having to wash the baby and dress her for burial and know that Opal had unintentionally killed her. It really is interesting reading about old wives tales and also how some people superstitiously clung to them. I find it interesting that you thought David had a strong faith. I had the opposite feeling. I questioned his role as a pastor because of how he treated Christy when she told him about what she prayed for. He said something to the affect that she was bothering God with the little things. I thought her faith was stronger than his at that moment. I think he has a moral code that he sticks to, but there seems to be a lack of faith in God. Rules rather than relationship maybe? I agree with you on thinking that she crossed the line in writing for donations. That's a good idea about she would have done better by just writing about life and letting the friends and family decide how to proceed. Looking forward to this weeks reading and hearing your thoughts on that! Oh, and glad that these chapters picked up pace for you :)

    1. to me David's faith is stronger than Doc MacNeil. I didn't mean stronger than Christy's or even Miss Alice's.

    2. Ah, gotcha! You are definitely right there. Doc McNeill is definitely lacking in faith. More of his story comes out in further chapters. For some reason I like him better than David even though I think that he is too old for a relationship with Christy.

  2. That's a compelling quote you picked! I'm glad the story is picking up for you; there's definitely a lot going on, isn't there? As slow as the pace of life is in the Cove, I guess it feels busy with all that Christy has to learn and all the relationship building she has to do. :)

I enjoyed reading your thoughtful responses to the questions! Your suggestion for #3 is lovely, to have Christy open up and share about her experiences without outright asking for what she thinks is needed.
